老井王（倪大红 饰）的大半生都在地下矿井中度过，积累了丰富的经验，是这一行内名副其实的老前辈，带出了一批优秀而勇敢的徒弟，深受同行们的信任和爱戴。就在他准备退休安享晚年之时，煤老板告知他必须再进行一次下井爆破作业，哪知道正是这最后的任务，让老井王遭遇了他职业生涯里的最大危机。 带着小广西（陈晓东 饰）等徒弟，老井王一行人深入地下，哪知道在爆破的时候发生了意外，矿井这个坍塌了下来，阻断了老井王等人的归路。矿难的发生很快就引起了媒体的注意，被困矿工们的家属也迅速聚集了起来。地面之上，一出出人性的考验接连上演，地表之下，老井王带着幸存的矿工们拼命寻找着出路。
